Elio Motors:利用众筹造机车 立志成为下一个特斯拉

Tesla Motors Inc. has so far been the only successful US automobile startup in decades. Following in its ranks is now a new budding automobile startup, Elio Motors, which has rapidly been able to raise $21 million in crowdfunding commitments to fulfill its vision to build an affordable three-wheeler.

Ever since the establishment of an online crowdfunding campaign on the startup accelerator, Start Engine last month, Elio Motors has received almost a million dollars in the form of non-binding commitments from interested financiers each day. The startup automaker has only $4 million left before it hits the $25 million target. The funding campaign is targeted to help the automaker in the production of the three-wheeler listed for $6,800.

The organization has benefited from the new investment regulations defined in the 2012 The Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (JOBS Act) that are aligned with US Securities and Exchange Commission regulations. The law intends to encourage funding of small and innovative enterprises by eliminating several securities regulations. Passed with support from bipartisan groups, and signed into law by President Barack Obama, the law allows startup companies to raise as much as $50 million from non-accredited and accredited investors.

“We’re always looking for new ways to do things and crowdfunding is certainly the wave of the future for entrepreneurs, start-up organizations and investors,” said Paul Elio, founder and Chief Executive Officer at Elio Motors. “With so many people expressing interest in our vehicle and our company, it shows we are on the right track – both in how we have developed and marketed this vehicle and also in how we are raising the capital needed to continue our march toward production.”

Once Elio Motors reaches its financing target and fulfills the required audit by the SEC, the funds will be utilized to develop 25 prototypes of the three-wheeler for testing and validation.

The company is still working to develop the two-seat, three-wheeler having a fuel economy rating of 84 mpg. An initial prototype of the vehicle is reported to have crossed a top speed of 10 mph. Elio Motors is expected to employ around 1500 workers at a former GM production facility in Shreveport, Louisiana. Another 1500 jobs are expected to be created at supplier companies. The company is expecting the potential ripple effect to create further 18,000 jobs across the country. Third party suppliers for the model include Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, Lear Corporation and Bosch GmbH.

The company has faced several delays with the project, but Elio Motors claims the production is on track for completion by mid-2016. That is, if the company beats the odds to produce at scale.

Technically, the three-wheeler is characterized as a motorcycle. This makes the vehicle a possible competitor to the motorcycle manufacturer Harley Davidson Inc. With its promising price tag of $6800, the vehicle is listed way below the average selling price of a new vehicle, that comes at about $33,650. It therefore, also poses as a potential rival to the super budget fragment of the auto industry.

In elucidating how the pricing point of a mere $6800 is possible, Elio Motors’ Start Engine explains how the company is “laser focused on cost savings.” The savings revolve about everything from vendor relationships, engineering decisions, the retail network to the arrangement of its service. The company claims that its emphasis on detail in each of these aspects helps keep down the vehicle’s total cost.

What’s more, the fledgling automaker is bidding to follow the success of Tesla Motors. It says it intends to emulate the automotive giant’s direct sales model. The fact that Tesla’s business model of same sales approach without the need for dealers and intermediary, is used as an inspiration for budding startups to emulate, is a testimony to the success of Tesla.

The company is also expected to partner with tires and auto repair service provider Pep Boys for service. As per the company’s website, pre-orders of more than $290 million have already been received.
